Charles BABBAGE Avrupa'da modern bilgisayarların başlangıç çalışmalarını yapan matematikçi, İngiliz bilim adamı. 1791’de Totnes Devon’da doğdu. Cambridge’de matematik profesörlüğü yaptı ve İngiliz Kraliyet Astronomi kuruluşunu gerçekleştirenler arasında bulundu. Fakat esas ilgisini hesap makinaları çekmiş olup, birbirini takib eden tam sayıların karelerini hesaplamak içini Fark Makinası ve daha ileri matematik işlemler için Analitik Makinayı yapmayı düşündü ise
