Özellikleri: Başı ve boynu çıplak, koyu kahverenkli tüyleri maden parıltılıdır. Erkekler tavus gibi kabarır. Evcillerin ana yurdu Meksika'dır. Çeşitleri: Kuzey Amerika hindisi (M. gallapavo) ve benekli hindi (M.ocellata) olmak üzere iki türü vardır.
