Phenakistoscope (okunuşu: ``fenakistoskop``), ilk animasyon aletlerinden biridir. Zoetrope`tan önce kullanılmıştır. 1831 yılında Belçikalı Joseph Plateau ve Avustuya`lı Simon von Stampfer tarafından eşzamanlı olarak bulunmuştur. Phenakistoscope kelimesinin Yunan kökeni göz aldatması gibi bi anlam taşır. orijinal kelime "deceiving viewer". --> Plateau`nun orijinal phenakisticope`unun bir replikası olan özel onursal Joseph Plateau Ödülü her yıl Flanders Uluslararası Film Festivali`nin özel bir konuğuna verilir.
