Uzaktan algılama, yeryüzünün ve yer kaynaklarının incelenmesinde onlarla fiziksel bağlantı kurmadan kaydetme ve inceleme tekniğidir.

Doğal çevrenin önemli bir bölümünün dinamik nitelikte olması bunların bir kez belirlenmesi ile yetinilmeyip sık sık takip edilmelerini gerektirmektedir. Bunun için de, modern havacılık ve uzay teknolojisinden yararlanılır. Uzaktan algılama adı verilen yöntemle havadan ve uzaydan elde edilen görüntüler yorumlanabilir.

Hava fotoğrafları, fotogrametrik yöntemle harita yapımında kullanılmakla birlikte, çeşitli mühendislik çalışmaları ve özellikle fotointerpretasyon (foto-yorumlama) yöntemi ile doğal kaynakların bulunmasında da kullanılmakta ve böylece, Uzaktan Algılama yönteminin en önemli verilerinden birini oluşturmaktadır.

Uzaktan algılamanın en önemli kaynağını uzay fotoğrafları ve tabiki uydular oluşturur. Uzay fotoğrafçılığı insanların uzaya açılmasından 10 yıl kadar bir süre önce, 1946 yılında başlamıştır. 2. dünya savaşında Almanlar`dan alınan V-2 roketlerinin bazıları 1946 yılında ABD`de uzayın bilinmeyenlerini incelemeye yarayacak bir takım gereçlerle donatılarak fırlatılmış ve yerin 105 km yükseklikten ilk kez resmi çekilmiştir.

1955 yılında Viking-12 roketi ile 244 km ve 1959 yılında da Atlas roketi ile 1120 km yükseklikten ABD`nin bazı bölgelerinin fotoğrafları çekilebilmiştir.

Dünya da ilk uydunun 1957 yılında Sovyetler Birliği(SSCB) tarafından Sputnik adıyla uzaya gönderilmesi ile yeni bir çağ açılmıştır.

Yerin uzaydan otomatik fotoğraf makinaları ile fotoğraflarını çeken ilk insansız uydu 1959 yılında ABD tarafından uzaya gönderilen Explorer-6 uydusudur.

Yer kaynaklarının araştırılması ve yer yüzünün incelenmesi amacı ile uzaya gönderilen ilk uydu ERTS uydusudur. 1972 yılında yörüngesine ABD tarafından yerleştirilmiş ve adı daha sonra Landsat-1 olarak değiştirilmiştir. Bu uydu iş göremez hale gelince Landsat-2 bu devreden çıkınca 1978`de Landsat-3, 1982`de Landsat-4 ve 1985`de Landsat-5 uzaya gönderilmiştir. Bu uydunun amacı ziraat, orman, jeoloji, su kaynakları, haritacılık gibi yer kaynaklarının araştırılmasıdır.

Uzaktan algılama yöntemi :

- Otoyol, devlet yolu, demiryolu ve boru hattı koridor seçimleri, sulama, baraj, madencilik ve ormancılık ön etüdlerinde,

- Stereo uydu görüntülerinden etüd haritaları ve 3 boyutlu sayısal arazi modellerinin hazırlanmasında,

- Deniz ve kıyı kirliliği etüdlerinde, uydu görüntülerinden işlenip uygun filitremeler yapılarak kirlilik haritalarının yapımında,

- Tarımsal amaçlı, arazi kullanım ve toprak haritalarının etüdünde,

- Orman kaynaklarının ön envanterlerinin yapımı ve haritalanmasında, ayrıca orman yangınlarının yaptığı hasarların tespitinde ve görüntülerin işlenmesi-haritalandırılmasında,

- Maden aramalarında, jeolojik etüdlerin yapımında, yer çalışmalarını süre ve maliyet açısından en aza indirmek amacıyla,

- Ve bunlara benzer daha birçok çalışmada başarıyla uygulanmaktadır.
