} Yıldız işareti, yıldız imi veya asterisk, tipografik bir sembol veya gliftir. İsmini yıldız biçimine olan benzerliğinden alır. ``Asterisk`` ismi de geç Latince ``asteriscus`` yani "küçük yıldız"dan gelir. Bunun kökeni ise aynı anlama gelen Yunanca ``asteriskos`` sözcüğüdür}. Bilgisayar bilimleriyle uğraşanlar genellikle işareti İngilizce yıldız anlamına gelen ``star`` sözcüğü ile anarlar. Zaman zaman yanlış biçimde asteriks (``asterix``) olarak anılır.

İlk kullanımı doğum tarihlerini belirtmek içindir. Orijinal şekilde altı kollu idi ve her kol bir damla şeklindeydi. Daktilolarda bu şekilde yer almıştır. Bununla beraber bazı daktiloların her kolu ayrı bir şekilde basmakta güçlük çekmiştir. Ayrıca Arap-İsrail ihtilafı nedeniyle birçok Arap altı-kollu sembolü barındıran daktiloları almayı tercih etmememiştir. Bunun sebebi altı-kollu sembolü İsrail bayrağında bulunan Davud Yıldızına benzetmeleriydi. Bu nedenle ``Arap yıldızı`` olarak anılan beş köşeli bir yıldız ayrı bir sembol olarak birçok sistemde kullanılmıştır. Bununla birlikte bazı fontlarda (yazı biçimi) Arap yıldızı sekiz köşelidir. İngilizcede kullanımı

  • Yazılı metinde yıldız işareti bir dipnot veya benzer bir notu refere etmek için kullanılır.
  • Yine yazılı metinde, yıldız işareti bir küfürlü sözcüğün belirli bir kısmını engellemek ve böylece de hakareti hafifletmek için kullanılır.
