(İspanyolca, ``La Espaí±ola``) Karayiplerin ikinci büyük adası olup Küba`nın doğusunda bulunur. Kristof Kolomb 5 Aralık 1492`de burayı keşfetmiş ve 1493`deki ikinci seferinde burada İspanyanın Yeni Dünyadaki ilk sömürgesini kurmuştur.

Adanın batıdaki üçte birinde Haiti, doğudaki üçte ikisinde ise Dominik Cumhuriyeti bulunur.

Tarihçe

Ryswick Antlasması ile Fransızlar Hispanyola`nın Batı tarafının kontrolünü ele geçirince bu bölge hem nüfus hem zenginlik olarak hızla adanın geri kalanının önüne geçer. Dominik Cumhurıyeti`nin nüfusu Haiti`ninkini ancak 1970 li yıllarda geçer. Haıti`liler adanın doğusunu birkaç kere istila etmişlerdir: 1790`larda Toussaint Louverture ve 1821-1822`de Jean-Pierre Boyer yönetimleri zamanında.

Coğrafya

Hispanyola 76,480 km² ile Küba`dan sonra Karayiplerin ikinci büyük adasıdır. Kuzeydoğusunda Küba, güneybatısında Jamaika, doğusunda Porto Riko, kuzeyinde Bahama ve Turks ve Caicos Adaları bulunur.

Küba, Hispanyola, Jamaika, and Porto Riko Büyük Antilleri oluştururlar. Büyük Antiller anakaranın denizdeki kayasal yükseltileridir, Küçük Antiller ise genel olarak genç, volkanik adalar, veya mercan adalarından oluşur.
